The first people in Virginia -- known today as "Paleo" or "ancient" Indians -- were nomads who arrived more than 16,000 years ago during the ice age. They survived by hunting animals and gathering plants. They lived among conifers and grasslands, the ranges of which once extended onto Virginia's exposed continental shelf. |
