Although Pocahontas was only twelve years old when she met John Smith in 1607, she had grown to the age of twenty-one when, in London, she sat for an artist who created an engraving of her. That engraving can be viewed by opening the draw below. It was the source for this modern painting by Mary Ellen Howe, who introduced color to better recreate Pocahontas's appearance. |
