Existing comment: The Lost Colony

An exploratory trip to the Outer Banks in 1584 brought back to England two friendly Algonquian-speaking Indians. Encouraged, the English sent a second voyage in 1585 to establish a fortified camp, from which John White and Thomas Hariot explored the mainland and the Chesapeake Bay, making maps and paintings to record the native culture. Colonists were sent the next year. By 1590, they had disappeared.
