Henry Fitzhugh (1750-1777), at age twenty-one, by John Hesselius, 1771. Henry Fitzhugh was heir to the Fitzhugh's ancestral estate Bedford on Virginia's Northern Neck. Initially, however, he lived at nearby Fitzhughburg. This portrait was painted on the occasion of his marriage and coming of age. A mere six years later, however, he was dead. The frame is original. |
