Existing comment: General George S Patton (1885-1945), commander of the US Third Army in World War II, was born in California, but from Virginians on both sides. In World War I, he claimed that his Virginia ancestors appeared to him in the sky and exhorted him to have the courage to take a German machine gun nest. Patton's briefcase and corncob pipe descended to his godson Henry H Whiting, brother of the donor.
