Dr. John Williamson Palmer
W. Randolph Bookseller, Richmond, Va.
Before his death in May 1863, Confederate general Thomas Jonathan Jackson was praised by his allies and feared by his enemies. Dr. John Williamson Palmer wrote Stonewall Jackson's Way in 1862 in Garrett County, Maryland, after hearing distant guns that marked the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). "I knew that Stonewall was in it, whatever it may be; it was his way -- 'Stonewall Jackson's Way.' " The song did much to spread the Jackson legend.
