He Was A Friend of Mine is a traditional folk song in which the singer laments the death of a friend. The earliest known version was recorded in 1939, and since then it has been recorded by singers from Bob Dylan to The Black Crowes. The Byrds altered the song's melody and lyrics to lament the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. |
