Existing comment: Babylon is Fallen, 1863

Biblical references abounded as slavery crumbled during the Civil War. Some evoked the exodus of the Jews out of Egypt; others feared that their world was coming to an end. The ancient city of Babylon, in present-day Iraq, is a biblical symbol of evil. Similar attitudes existed a hundred years later as the system of Jim Crow was being dismantled through the efforts of activists during the civil rights movement.
