Existing comment: Joan Baez:
In 1963, twenty-two-year-old Joan Baez stood at the helm of the folk revival. Derived from the gospel song I'll Overcome Someday, We Shall Overcome became an anthem associated with 1960s civil rights movement as it was sung in churches, at rallies and festivals, at folk concerts, and at peaceful demonstrations. As 170,000 black Americans and 30,000 white Americans descended upon Washington in 1963, Baez led them in singing We Shall Overcome.
