Existing comment: SNCC Political Button, c 1960s
Like antislavery activists a century before, the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (pronounced "snick") emerged in 1960 as a place for young people to become involved in the civil rights movement. Following the February 1, 1960, sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina, college students met with African American activist Ella Baker. By 1961, a small group of student activists made a commitment to work fulltime toward achieving the goals of the civil rights movement.
