After witnessing wounded soldiers return from the war in Vietnam in 1964, even though the US government was denying involvement, twenty-four-year-old Buffy Saint-Marie wrote Universal Soldier. She commented that "it's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all." Although the song was not initially popular, other musicians -- including Donovan -- took note and reworked the song. |
