Referring to the unofficial first flag of the Confederacy, twenty-seven-year-old Harry Macarthy wrote new lyrics that would inspire pride in the newly formed Confederate States of America. The song debuted in the spring of 1861, and six editions and three additional arrangements were published by 1864.
