When nations go to war, songs are among the many tools used to express a spirit of devotion to one's country. The American Civil War (1861-65) and the Vietnam War (1955-73) inspired the singing of patriotic songs in schools, at home, and at meetings. Their words infused people with a sense of belonging, even when circumstances proved otherwise, and they were touchstones around which people rallied. Many of these songs are iconic and continue to instill feelings of pride and hope, which remain a constant part of the American experience.
