This grotesque device was used for perforating the skull to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases. Trepanation has a long history. Evidence has been found in prehistoric human remains from Neolithic times onwards. Cave paintings reveal that people once believed the procedure would cure mental disorders, epileptic seizures, and migraines. Trepanation was also a primitive surgery technique for head wounds. |
