Diary of Elijah S. Johnston, March 9, 1863-January 14, 1864
Pvt. Elijah Johnson [last name spelled two different ways on the sign] of the 15th Virginia Calvary carried this diary and Bible in his left coat pocket when he took part in a Civil War skirmish near Culpeper Court House on September 13, 1863. During the fight, a rifle bullet passed through the diary and lodged in the Bible, saving the young soldier's life. |
