"Stonewall" Jackson was renowned among Civil War generals for his decisiveness, quick action, and tactical brilliance. He was also familiar to his troops and acquaintances alike for his awkwardness, both socially and physically. This sketch of Jackson by one of his subordinates suggests the oft-noted peculiarities of stance and stride to which the general's chief topographer, Jedediah Hotchkiss, refers in his caption.
