Existing comment: Nails, c. 1785
This bizarre arrangement of nails makes it a memorable piece, especially when compared to other everyday items in the society's collections that are simply labeled with a handwritten tag. The nails were used in the original construction of the Virginia State Capitol and were collected following the collapse of the second-floor courtroom in 1870. The nails were given to the donor in 1929, presumably in this arrangement.
