This book bears the inscription, "In this volume note particular the efforts of the Inquisition to blot out certain paragraphs with hot irons and acids, charring the paper." The Inquisition began burning books in 1497, especially those related to Judaism, Islam, and medicine and other sciences. This medical volume by a Swiss physician was on the list of books banned for heresy by the Roman Catholic court.
