Existing comment: Madison's Story
Madison has been praised as the "Father" of both the Constitution and the "Bill of Rights."
Succeeding Jefferson as president, he was -- as is still -- criticized for not avoiding war with Britain in 1812.
The modern publication of Madison's papers began in 1962, and five biographies have recently been rushed to press. Pundits credit Madison with anticipating today's political battles, without recognizing that compromises changed his original conception of the Constitution.
