Existing comment: The Duel

After using his political influence to block Aaron Burr's attempt to steal the presidency in 1800, Hamilton went on to oppose Burr's 1804 bid for governor of New York. This resulted in Burr challenging Hamilton to a duel.
The pair met in Weehawken, New Jersey, on July 11, 1804. Hamilton likely fired first above Burr's head. Burr returned fire, striking Hamilton in the lower abdomen.
The mortally wounded Hamilton lingered for thirty-one hours before dying. Burr lived another thirty-two years.
