Existing comment: Contentious Election

Hamilton resigned from public service in 1795 and returned to New York City to practice law.
After John Adams defeated Jefferson in the presidential election of 1796, Hamilton regularly advised Adams' cabinet -- much to the president's distaste. The presidential election of 1800, pitted Adams against Jefferson once again.
Federalists attacked Jefferson as un-Christian, un-American, and pro-French. Republicans denounced the increasing federal power under Adams' presidency.
Each side believed that victory by the other would ruin the nation.
