Congress tasked him with solving the economic problems that had plagued the United States since the Revolution: massive war debt, unstable currency, and a reliance on imported goods.
Hamilton's recommendations put him squarely at odds with Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson and Virginia Congressman James Madison.
