Early Confederate naval officer uniforms were made dark blue but were later changed to gray. Hoffbauer's inclusion of the gilded strips of lace on the sleeve and the rank insignia on the shoulders of the officer at the bottom center of this mural indicates that the artist intended to portray either a navy commander of an engineer. |
