Mosby was born in Powhatan County in 1833. He attended the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1854, and established a law practice in Loudoun County. During the war he served as a cavalry scout before his promotion to command the 43rd Virginia Cavalry in 1863. Mosby and his men disrupted Union operations in Northern Virginia so successfully that the region became known as "Mosby's Confederacy."
