Existing comment: The Los Angeles Aqueduct System:
Construction of the city's 233-mile aqueduct to the Owens Valley began in 1907 and was completed in 1913. In 1940, 23 miles of additional facilities were built to carry water from the Mono Basin to the Upper Owens River. The Mono Basin Project extended the length of the aqueduct system to 338 miles.
A second, parallel, Los Angeles Aqueduct was completed in 1970. It extends from Haiwee Reservoir to Los Angeles and increased the system capacity by 60%. Together, on average, the two aqueducts deliver about 290 million gallons per day to the city of Los Angeles, which owns and operates the system.
