Existing comment: The Master

Until retiring in 2014, Oliphant remained the most syndicated editorial cartoonist in the nation, and his body of sculpture and works on paper continued to grow. His public profile also expanded: he appeared on Washington political television shows and began performing public "talk and draws," creating large-format drawings for the audience. He left Washington in 2004 for Santa Fe, Mexico, but this did not reduce his influence: residencies, awards, and invitations to events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos ensued.

Amid all of this, he continued to devour the news and produce trenchant daily drawings. No public figure was safe until he retired. Even then, he could not resist an attempt on the current president. On February 2, 2017, he published two Donald Trump on the website The Nib, one of which shows Trump as a childlike member of the Hitler Youth asking a ghoulish Steve Bannon what his thinks of his outfit.
