Existing comment: Punk Emerges

Punk came into being not long after a small, live, Amelie penguin made a brief appearance in the Adelaide Advertiser newsroom (it was soon delivered to a zoo). In his earliest incarnation, Punk did not speak. An early piece in the Advertiser staff newsletter described Punk as "you and me, ratepayer, taxpayer and general John Citizen, who foots all the bills -- and who doesn't have much to say about it; hence the inarticulate penguin." Oliphant has said that Punk provided him a much-needed outlet in the paper's restrictive editorial environment.

Shown here is one of two scrapbook compiled by Oliphant's father of hie son's published drawings in Adelaide newspapers. Cartoons, occasional drawings, and some published reader comments are to be found in these unique volumes.
