This gold service badge was worn by 1st Lt. Thomas L. Rosser when he served as an instructor to a Confederate militia battery, the 2d Company, Washington Artillery Battalion of New Orleans. Rosser had been appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point in 1856, but when his home state of Texas seceded from the Union in 1861, he resigned, joined the Confederacy, and rose to the rank of major general commanding cavalry in Virginia.
