The Army faced global challenges during the Cold War. In Europe, the Soviet Union organized the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance of Eastern European nations formed in response to Western Europe's North Atlantic Treaty Organization. For four decades, American Soldiers helped their NATO allies deter and attack by the Soviet-ed Warsaw Pact forces. At the same time, they fought wars in Korea and Vietnam against the enemies of democracy.
