Existing comment: The Army and 9/11
11 September 2001
In a coordinated attack, terrorists flew two airlines into the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon near Washington, DC. Another plane crashed in the fields of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, when passengers attempted to overtake the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the terrorist attacks. New York Army National Guard Soldiers arrived at ground zero within hours and at the Pentagon, Soldiers were immediately involved as both victims and impromptu first responders. The Army's first role in the disaster was to reinforce local authorities in relief and security operations, and a broader mission soon emerged as Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers were called-up to secure airports, rail stations, waterways, power plants, bridges, dams, and installations on federal property.
