Existing comment: San Francisco Earthquake
(18 April 1906)
The devastating earthquake caused gas lines to break, resulting in fires that spread rapidly across the city. The acting commander of the Army's Division of the Pacific, headquartered in San Francisco, upon seeing the massive destruction, acted without federal authority and quickly mobilized Army forces in the area to provide disaster assistance. Initially, Soldiers conducted patrols in parts of the city to maintain order, help fight fires, provide medical assistance, and distribute food and clothing. By 21 April 1906, the Army's effort increased as Soldiers served meals around the clock, established tent camps, dug latrines, and helped residents clean up and rebuild.
