The United States supplied Allied forces with a major share of the weapons and equipment that won World War II.
Even before entering the war, the United States began to expand its industrial base and shift it to war materiel. During the war years, American industry produced 40 percent of global munitions. Exceeding the combined output of all Allied countries, America produced twice as much as both Germany and Japan. Americans accepted rationing of gasoline, food, clothing and other consumer goods and planted Victory Gardens that grew an estimated 9-10 million pounds of fruit and vegetables a year.
