World War II
As the nation focuses on winning World War II, unemployment drops to less than 2 percent. Women and minorities play an increased role in the workplace as millions of men go off to war in the armed services. More than a million African Americans serve in the Army, although, as in American society, they continue to be segregated. Other minorities also serve during the war. Women receive an expanded role in the Army with the formation of the Women's Army Corps.
