Le Corbusier envisioned a facade with sun-shielding slats of concrete or stone, like the ones he was using for a housing project in Marseille. Harrison wanted to use a new product called Thermopane, a form of tinted insulated glass. It was much more expensive but better suited to New York's weather. Thermopane was selected after an in-house test confirmed that it was indeed preferable.
