Buried History
Opening in 1815, the Washington Canal once ran beneath this site. Barges carried food and goods like flour and firewood from Maryland to the city. The canal often silted up and was abandoned and filled in 1928. Three blocks north of M Street, SE, are paved over the old canal. |
