Existing comment: Two of Charles Dickens's letters written during his first visit to America:
Dickens first travelled to America in 1842 together with his wife Catherine. In his many letters written during his visit he told his correspondents in England about his experiences in America. This letter is to his artist friend Daniel Maclise in which he wrote about travelling by railway departing from Baltimore.
In the other letter on the far right, he wrote of his home-sickness and yearning for 'Home, three thousand miles away' during his stay in New York.
