Sutter's arrival in the Sacramento Valley meant a new way of life to the Indian tribes that lived near the fort. Sutter did not propose to convert them to his religion as the mission padres had tried to do. Sutter allied himself with various tribes, often promising them protection from their tradition enemies. |
