They were finally able to slip across the Potomac River under the cover of darkness and find The Cottage, home of Elizabeth Quesenberry on the Virginia shore. With the aid of friends, the lady was able to get them to Cleydael, the home of Dr. Richard Stuart, where they received an unfriendly welcome. They were sent to the nearby cabin of a free black to spend the night. The next day, they were directed across the Rappahannock River to the town of Port Royal and the Peyton house. A brief sojourn there, and the pair moved on to the farm home of the Garretts. |
