Existing comment: John Harrison Surratt, Sr., had not been the best of providers for his family, and his sudden death in August of 1862, left his widow Mary and daughter Anna with serious problems -- with the remaining men of the family on Confederate duty. Son Isaac was serving with the Texas Cavalry unit and young John Jr. quickly became involved as a Confederate courier.

The country farm soon became rather isolated for two women alone, and Mary Surratt decided to move to a home they had owned on H Street in Washington City since 1853.
