This mixed media relief is based on the Diamond Mine disaster in Scranton on December 9, 1914. The elevator that carried miners up and down the Tripp Shaft had a rotten floor and that day the floor collapsed with 13 miners on board. Only one survived. It is considered one of the worst disasters in Scranton's long mining history.
