Existing comment: This sheet-metal mailbox was stronger than earlier models made of iron. It was designed in 1901 by Eugene D. Schleble, a Toledo, Ohio, dentist. The mailbox was not perfect, but for a special reason.
The contract to make 49,000 of Schleble's mailboxes was obtained illegally. Several postal employees and contractors were charged with conspiracy and fraud as a result.
