Existing comment: Joseph Galloway, 1731-1803
Joseph Galloway, the powerful longtime Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly, believed that colonial grievances (which he freely admitted having) should be addressed through orderly petition rather than by clamor in the streets. Appalled by the War for Independence, Galloway stood with the mother country. In late 1778 he departed his native land, leaving his wife, Grace, behind to protest the confiscation of family property.
This miniature was painted in England, where Galloway spent the rest of his life.
