Existing comment: William Carmichael, 1739-1795
Living in England at the outbreak of the American Revolution, the gregarious William Carmichael offered his services to Benjamin Franklin's diplomatic contingent in France. Sent back to America with official dispatches, he was chosen in 1778 to represent Maryland at the Continental Congress. In September 1779, when John Jay was designated minister to Spain, Carmichael accompanied Jay as secretary of the legation. He remained in Madrid as the charge d'affaires, but, having never been granted the title of minister, he resigned his post in 1794. He died in Spain the following year.
