Existing comment: Anne Catharine Hoof Green, died 1775
Anne Catharine Hoof married printer Jonas Green, future editor of the Maryland Gazette, in 1738, bore fourteen children and, like the good Dutch housewife she was trained to be, helped, as necessary, in her husband's business. Jonas died in 1767, and the widow Green succeeded him as Maryland's public printer and carried on the Gazette, recording opinions and events leading up to the American Revolution.
Mrs. Green's obituary lauded her only as a wife and mother, "for conjugal Affection, and parental Tenderness, an Example to her sex." But Charles Willson Peale, showing her with her newspaper in hand, indicates she was also a professional woman -- one of the few of her era.
Charles Willson Peale, 1769
