Existing comment: Isaac Singer's patent model for improvements to his sewing machine:
This 1854 sewing machine model that Isaac Singer submitted to the Patent Office -- which originally occupied this building -- provided further refinements to the device he patented in 1851. Although Singer did not invent the sewing machine, he improved it dramatically, making it practical for both industrial and domestic use. As an 1853 advertisement for Singer's machine stated: "The sewing machine has, within the last two years, acquired a wide celebrity, and established its character as one of the most efficient labor-saving instruments ever introduced to public notice."
