Nettie Fowler McCormick, 1835-1923:
Raised in a strongly Christian fundamentalist environment, Nettie Fowler showed her commitment to philanthropy and moral duty after her marriage to industrialist Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the mechanical reaper. When Cyrus died, Nettie McCormick became an important business influence. She helped lead the McCormick Harvesting Company through the travails of the wheat market collapse in 1896 and into lasting significance as the company became known as International Harvester. She is perhaps best known as a philanthropist; she contributed to more than forty schools and colleges throughout the country, particularly to the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
