Prominent South Carolina political and military leaders, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and Thomas Pinckney -- both of whom had participated in the 1779 siege of Savannah -- were sought out by John Trumbull in 1791 for a contemporary history painting depicted that disastrous assault. Trumbull failed to carry through on the idea, but undertook miniatures of the brothers which remained in the family until presented to the National Portrait Gallery.
