Elie Wiesel, born 1928
Elie Wiesel's moving testimony, both written and oral, confirmed the horrors of the Holocaust for millions. He was fifteen when he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz. He and two of his three sisters survived. After the war, he lived in France and began to write about his experiences in a series of books, beginning with "Night" (1958). He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, and since 1976 he has been the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University. Miriam Baker's original bust was commissioned in 2001 for the Holocaust Library at Chapman University in Orange, California.
