As president and chief executive, Abraham Lincoln assumed many roles, not the least of which was commander-in-chief. In this scene the president is faintly sketched under a striped conical awning, reviewing troops that have probably just arrived at the capital. Noted Civil War illustrator Alfred Waud made this drawing in June 1861, three weeks before the First Battle of Bull Run took place thirty-one miles away, in Virginia.
