Existing comment: Lauren Bacall, 1924-2014
In a 1966 article titled "The Pleasures & Perils of Middle Age," Time noted that "one-fifth of the nation was between the ages of 40 and 60." In recognition of her spirit, vitality, and beauty at age forty-one, the magazine highlighted Lauren Bacall, who was enjoying critical acclaim in the Broadway comedy Cactus Flower. From the age of nineteen, Bacall had been a Hollywood favorite, often co-starring with Humphrey Bogart, her husband until his death at age fifty-seven. Artist Boris Chaliapin introduced the autumn leaves in this portrait to symbolize the editors' story theme and cover caption.
